Good Morning SkedX'ers!
Today I wanted to share with you all the 8 essential drivers for employee engagement taken from the Conference Board of Canada's Employee Engagement Study that was published in 2006. The 8 drivers are still very relevant today and should be the focus of your engagement efforts.
The 8 Drivers Are:
1. Trust and Integrity: Do your employees believe the management team is truly concerned about their well being? Tell the truth, make communication more effective, listen to employees and follow through on the suggestions they have. As well as demonstrate the organizations goals and values through personal behaviour.
2. Nature of the Job: Does the day to day work promote positive mental and emotional stimulation? Are employees given the opportunity to be included in the everyday decision making process?
3. Individual Performance vs Company Performance: Does the employee understand the company's goals? Overall performance? Is it known to employees the impact of there individual performance on the organization as a whole?
4. Career Growth Opportunities: Do employees feel there is future opportunity for growth and promotion? Are tools and information provided for career growth and development at your organization?
5. Pride: Are employees prideful in the organization? Do they truly believe in what the organization represents? Is employee self esteem high enough? Would your employees recommend your organization to potential clients and to those in there personal lives?
6. Team work: Team work makes the dream work. Would you rather work by yourself or with a group where you can share ideas and discuss the best possible solution to the task at hand? Most would choose a group so encourage team work and delegate tasks to specific groups in your organization.
7. Employee Development: This refers to if the organization provides the opportunity for an employee to develop the specific skills they already have further. Compared to career growth, employee development is in the present not the future. So communicate with employees to find out what they are best at, what they want to improve on, and then provide the necessary tools to develop those skills to improve bottom line efforts.
8. Manager...Friend or Foe?: Do your employees value the relationship you (the manager) have with them? Do they consider you a friend or just a manager? If managers are friendly, motivating, and believe in there employees your employees will feel the same. At the end of the day it comes down to; do you believe in them (the employees)? If so they will believe in you (the organization.)

So managers consider the 8 key drivers for engagement above, where does your organization fit in with these 8 drivers? If your organization does not practice at least half of the drivers above your employees are disengaged, probably don't believe in the organization and will probably not stick around for the long term.
Employee engagement increases revenues, improves customer service, decreases turnover, and overall makes the organization a more enjoyable place to work. The key to a successful organization is a strong culture with engaged employees to make work feel less like work. Being able to make work less like work and still get the greatest amount of effort and quality in work from your employees is very important.
