Good Morning SkedX'ers!
Today I want to discuss how performance reviews are no longer an annual/quarterly/ monthly process but rather real time. By combining technology and feedback, we can now track an employee's performance in real time creating an internal competition but also providing managers with the ability to see who is working the most. Too many managers’ suffer from the too-little-too late feedback problem and end up losing top talent or keeping disengaged employees longer.
Feedback loops encourage behaviour change and good habits, they provide employees with useful information about their performance in real time. Because of that managers are able to make the adjusted changes in real time to steer employees in the desired performance direction.
With social networking and a greater implementation of all-in-one "portals” by organizations, now employees and managers can collaborate to make work as effective as possible. By building an organizational culture focused around micro-feedback and then comparing work ethic is viral among employees. These conversations then promote friendly competition, drive engagement, and motivate employees to go above and beyond expectations. The key is to make feedback a fully integrated part of the day-to-day processes and to recognize problems/implement change as quick as possible.
As social networking is increasing in popularity as an internal communication tool, it only makes sense to combine the two to build a greater connection between the different levels of the organization. Micro-feedback brings back the relevance and importance of performance reviews, as Generation Y takes over the workplace they seek statistics on their work ethic more than on an annual basis.
They are a generation of gamers and multi-taskers, they know what they want to achieve, and they want to know how hard/easy they worked to achieve that. The beauty of micro-feedback is that none of the data/feedback is created by you to survey performance, there is no disconnection from the work and it provides a snapshot of how performance is going at any given time.
